BSA Annual Conference 2007, University of East London
This year the conference included an Animal/Human stream for the first time. The stream was a great success and well attended.Inaugural Meeting of the BSA Animal/Human Studies Group (AHSG) University of Nottingham 26 September 2006
This meeting officially launched the Group. Moreover, it presented a forum for discussion and networking for researchers working on animal/human issues. There is sometimes a feeling of isolation amongst researchers in this area, but the membership of the Group (35 as of 20 November 2006) demonstrates that a significant body of researchers are working in this field, albeit widely dispersed. The key purpose of the meeting and workshop was to open up and explore the potential and functioning of the Group, and how the Group might develop and consolidate animal/human issues and related research within the social sciences.
Summary of possible points of action:
- to contribute to the bibliographic and research projects database. Please send your contributions to Becky Tipper - Rebecca.Tipper@manchester.ac.uk
- to investigate the possibility of holding a joint event(s) with for example the Rural Geography Group and/or the BSA Food Study Group
- volunteers are required to shape joint Visual Sociology and AHSG exhibition for BSA 2008. For additional information please contact Professor Nickie Charles at Nickie.Charles@warwick.ac.uk
- to visit and possibly join the human/animal relations discussion board http://com2.runboard.com/bssha27 For additional information please contact Dr Richard Twine at r.twine@lancaster.ac.uk
- to investigate the availability of small grants for reading weekends
- to consider how best to promote the AHSG at the BSA conference in 2007 if an animal/human stream session goes ahead
- to start preparing an e-newsletter for AHSG members. Dr Rebekah Fox will oversee this project and can be contacted at Rebekah.Fox@rhul.ac.uk
- to draft a report summarising the discussions and issues explored at the inaugural meeting. Once the report is finalised it will be distributed to all current AHSG members and made available to all new members as they join the group.
